“While the ability to use engineering training to turn calculations and drawings into a real object within the built environment is rewarding, the ultimate accomplishment is to do that successfully while working as a team with peers, clients, contractors and project stakeholders.”
Railway track and structures
Running a railroad is a dynamic, challenging job that requires a focus on safety while keeping traffic moving. We prioritize these goals when we provide railroad maintenance and capacity improvements, working with a sense of urgency on your behalf. Our railway designers, engineers, specialists and scientists deliver experience and dedication.
‘FAST TO REACT’“Hanson is fast to react when an issue arises.” — Rich Scott, P.E., assistant director public projects, BNSF

- Heavy rail
Staying on track with improvements and updates is critical to the health of your business, and we understand that you lack the time for your operations to be interrupted by construction. Through our heavy rail design experience, we provide you with feasibility studies through final engineering, and we offer construction contract administration services to see projects through to completion. Find out more.
- Intermodal
When you’re upgrading or expanding your intermodal terminal or building a new site, we are a single source of engineering and management services for railway design and construction projects throughout the U.S. Our rail team has longstanding relationships performing intermodal services with BNSF Railway Co., Union Pacific Railroad, CSX Intermodal, CPKC and inland ports.

BNSF Memphis Intermodal terminal expansion Intermodal design and construction support require extensive knowledge, and you can trust our knowledge and experience with new terminal design, as well as expansion and rehabilitation of existing terminals. Terminal design or expansion starts with concept planning to achieve the optimal balance of working track length, container stacking, wheeled parking and support facilities. Our experience includes terminals using different types of lift equipment, from rail-mounted, wide-span gantry cranes, rubber-tired gantry (RTG) cranes, marine-style RTG cranes and sideloaders/reach stackers.
We also have extensive experience coordinating intermodal terminal design with technology providers for automated gate systems, inventory control systems, site communication systems and site security cameras and equipment.
Intermodal projects often require a multidisciplined design approach. Our team brings these skills with a comprehensive knowledge of yard track design and reconfiguration, lead track design and extensions, pavement design, structural design, stormwater design, surveying services, geotechnical services, environmental services and permitting, electrical design and mechanical design.
You can count on us for comprehensive intermodal design services from start to finish, including:
- project management
- conceptual plans
- shop drawing reviews
- final designs
