The U.S Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), Omaha District selected Hanson to provide technical expertise for revisions to the Unified Facilities Criteria (UFC). The UFC establishes planning, design, construction, sustainment, restoration and modernization criteria for Department of Defense facilities and applies to military departments and defense agencies.
Hanson assembled a multidisciplinary team with expertise in project management, bridge structural engineering, hydraulic and hydrologic engineering and geotechnical engineering. The team collaborated with USACE to develop technical recommendations for the next revision of UFC criteria on survey requirements for railroad design and rehabilitation projects.

Hanson revised all chapters of UFC 4-860-01, Railroad Design and Rehabilitation, incorporating updated design practices and new material usage. Significant enhancements included drainage design criteria; guidance on the use of engineered composite, steel, and concrete railroad ties; updated bridge design criteria; and the latest references to industry standards.
The update was completed per UFC 1-300-01, Criteria Format Standard. Hanson’s team reorganized and rewrote much of the document to meet required mood, tense and voice. Hanson also added hyperlinked bookmarks to the table of contents for improved navigation through the final PDF document.
