With years of experience working on hundreds of railroad-related projects, Mat serves as a senior vice president and Hanson’s railway market principal, directing the firm’s business development efforts and operations for the railroad industry nationwide.
Since joining Hanson in 1999 as a structural engineer, Mat has built a reputation as a leader in the railway market. He has worked with Class I railroads, major railway companies, industries and government agencies, guiding projects from inception to completion. As the leader of Hanson’s railway bridge group, he is instrumental in business development, mentoring railway project managers, providing technical knowledge and serving as a key liaison between Hanson and its clients.
IN MAT’S WORDS
“While the ability to use engineering training to turn calculations and drawings into a real object within the built environment is rewarding, the ultimate accomplishment is to do that successfully while working as a team with peers, clients, contractors and project stakeholders.”
Mat has extensive experience delivering complex projects, from planning and design to construction support. His notable projects for Hanson include serving as the engineer of record for the 3,300-foot-long Tanana River Bridge as part of Alaska Railroad Corp.’s Northern Rail Extension between North Pole and Delta Junction, Alaska, and the emergency repair of Norfolk Southern Corp.’s bridge over the Grand River near Brunswick, Missouri, which received the American Railway Engineering and Maintenance-of-Way Association’s (AREMA) Dr. William W. Hay Award for Excellence. Mat also contributed his leadership to the 4,875-foot-long bridge over Lake Pend Oreille in Sandpoint, Idaho, for BNSF Railway Co.; Union Pacific Railroad’s Proviso Yard third mainline track from Elmhurst to Melrose Park, Illinois, for the Chicago Region Environmental and Transportation Efficiency Program; and the replacement of Norfolk Southern’s Bridge 462.01 over the Tug River near Matewan, West Virginia.
Mat is a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) and AREMA, serving on its Committee 15: Steel Structures and as chair of Subcommittee 1: Design. His contributions to the industry have earned him recognition as a Rising Star in Structural Engineering by Structural Engineer magazine and the Civil Engineer of the Year Award from ASCE’s Central Illinois Section.
