USF central energy plant Cx

Project Summary

Founded in 1956, the University of South Florida (USF) was established to address the educational needs of urban, south Florida areas. Serving nearly 46,000 students annually, the university has more than 200 degree programs and offers courses at four campuses, including Tampa, which has a population of more than 2 million residents.

Hanson is providing building commissioning services for the construction of the new Southeast Central Energy Plant for the USF campus in Tampa. The team’s work involves commissioning of the central chilled water and condenser water systems.  This includes two 2,300-ton water-cooled centrifugal chillers, associated cooling towers, chilled water pumps (primary and secondary), condenser water pumps and related plant controls.

Additional related systems also commissioned during this process include:

  • a well pump, water softening and controls for cooling tower make-up water;
  • fan coil units and exhaust fans within the plant; and
  • chilled water connections to 12 existing buildings and six tertiary pumps on campus.

The commissioning services included development of the Owner's Project Requirements (OPR) and the Commissioning Plan (Cx Plan), construction observation (equipment installation and start-up), functional performance testing of HVAC systems, oversight review of Operation and Maintenance (O&M) training and documentation, and 10-month warranty review.
