Hanson receives Honor Award for work on P&L Railroad relocation project

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — Hanson Professional Services Inc. recently was honored for its work on the P&L Railroad bridge in Grand Rivers, Ky., with an Honor Award from the American Council of Engineering Companies of Illinois (ACEC-IL).  Honor Awards are given for exceptional engineering that meets the needs of the client and benefits the public welfare.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), Nashville District, selected Hanson to serve as the prime engineering consultant, guiding the design of the new 3,094-foot-long P&L Railroad bridge over the Tennessee River.  This relocated bridge was part of one of the nation’s largest ongoing engineering projects — construction of a new 1,200-foot-long lock on the Tennessee River.

The relocation, design and construction of the high-level, structural-steel railroad bridge required extensive coordination, innovative design and logistical considerations to realign this mainline railroad over a major river crossing.  During this project, Hanson designed the bridge and coordinated the relocation of 12,500 feet of mainline track.  The bridge design incorporated 17 approach spans and a 500-foot main span crossing the Tennessee River’s navigational channel.  The project team chose float-in construction for the main span, a design element that helped keep costs down for the USACE and provided minimal interruptions to the main navigational channel.

Judges for the 2011 Engineering Excellence Awards Competition included Amr S. Elnashai, Ph.D., department head, civil and environmental engineering, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign; Lisa Mattingly, administrator of professional service, Capital Development Board; James Mayka, community and land revitalization branch Superfund division, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency; Scott Stitt, bureau chief of design and environment, Illinois Department of Transportation; Greg Stukel, deputy director of program controls/system integrity, Illinois Tollway; Somali Tomczak, senior manager of environmental and safety, NICOR.
