Thoele, Underbrink honored with NSPE state chapter awards

Jared Thoele, P.E., S.E., a structural engineer at Hanson Professional Services Inc.’s Springfield, Illinois headquarters, and David Underbrink, P.E., a vice president and senior project manager at the firm’s Corpus Christi, Texas, office, have been honored by state chapters of the National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE).

Thoele has been named Young Engineer of the Year by the Capital Chapter of the Illinois Society of Professional Engineers (ISPE). He joined Hanson in 2011 and provides structural design services, construction observation and bridge inspections for roadway and railroad projects. He received bachelor’s and master’s degrees in civil engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and a bachelor’s degree in physics from Illinois College. Thoele, who also is a licensed professional engineer and a licensed structural engineer in Illinois, serves as the past president and representative of ISPE’s Capital Chapter.

Underbrink received the Engineer of the Year Award from the Nueces Chapter of the Texas Society of Professional Engineers (TSPE). He joined the firm in 2016, when Naismith Engineering Inc. was acquired by Hanson, and oversees the company’s transportation and water resource operations in Texas. He received bachelor’s and master’s degrees in civil engineering from Texas A&M University and is a licensed professional engineer in Texas. He has served as a board member for TSPE’s Nueces Chapter and received its Young Engineer of the Year Award in 1989 and President’s Award in 2001. He also is a member of NSPE, the Concrete Reinforcing Steel Institute, the American Concrete Institute, the American Society of Civil Engineers and the International Society of Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering. In 2002, the Texas Engineering Foundation named him the Distinguished Engineer of the Foundation.

The awards are based on engineering achievements; professional and technical society activities; civic, humanitarian and social activities; and continuing professional competence. ISPE Capital Chapter award recipients were honored Feb. 24 during the ISPE and American Society of Civil Engineers Honors and Awards Banquet at Erin’s Pavilion in Springfield; TSPE Nueces Chapter honorees were recognized Feb. 23 at the Solomon Ortiz Center in Corpus Christi.
