LISLE, Ill. — David R. McDonald Jr., P.E., PTOE, Ph.D., a vice president and the chief roadway engineer at Hanson Professional Services Inc., recently celebrated 15 years at the firm.

McDonald joined the company in 2002 and works at the Chicago regional office. He leads Hanson’s roadway technical discipline group, for which he focuses on strengthening the company’s technical services. He has provided engineering design services and guidance for various roadway projects, including the reconstruction and widening of a 3.6-mile section of the South Tri-State Tollway in Cook County, which involved the design of the Halsted Street interchange; the widening and reconstruction of a 22-mile section of Interstate 90 (Jane Addams Memorial Tollway) in Boone, McHenry and Kane counties; the reconstruction of the Cherry Valley interchange (I-90 and I-39) in Cherry Valley; and design corridor management services for the master planning of 22.5 miles of I-294 from 95th Street to Balmoral Avenue in Cook and DuPage counties.

McDonald earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in civil engineering in 1990 and 1992, respectively, from Clemson University and a doctorate in civil engineering in 1999 from Vanderbilt University. He is a licensed professional engineer in several states, including Illinois, a professional traffic operations engineer and a member of the American Council of Engineering Companies of Illinois and its Illinois Tollway Committee.

He is active with the Transportation Research Board (TRB) and has served on several of its committees and panels. In 2016, he was appointed to a panel that is researching the merits of highway lanes designated for the use of connected and autonomous vehicles. In May, his paper about how connected and autonomous vehicles may affect geometric design was selected as one of the top five papers at the TRB’s fifth Urban Streets Symposium in Raleigh, North Carolina. He is an adjunct professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago, where he presents lectures about engineering topics, advises senior design teams and serves on thesis committees.

Hanson is a national, employee-owned consulting firm providing engineering, planning and allied services. The Chicago regional office is located at 750 Warrenville Road, Suite 200, Lisle, IL 60532. The office may be reached by phone at (630) 990-3800.
