Springfield’s Capitol Avenue reconstruction project receives Outstanding Civil Engineering Achievement Award

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), Central Illinois Section, recently recognized the city of Springfield’s Capitol Avenue reconstruction project with its 2010 Outstanding Civil Engineering Achievement Award.  This prestigious award – presented to the city of Springfield as well as its engineering consultant, Hanson Professional Services Inc. – recognizes a project that best illustrates superior civil engineering skills and represents a significant contribution to civil engineering progress and to society.

The Capitol Avenue reconstruction project, recommended in the 2002 Regional/Urban Design Assistance Team (R/UDAT) report, includes a multifunctional grand promenade that ties the Capitol campus to the downtown and surrounding historic sites.  Notable achievements of this project include pedestrian safety considerations with shorter crosswalk lengths, motorist safety improvements with the addition of a roundabout at 12th Street and Capitol Avenue, utility upgrades, and increased green space.

Founded in 1852, ASCE represents more than 14,000 members of the civil engineering profession worldwide.  It is America’s oldest national engineering society.
