Hanson’s Indianapolis office donates pens, books to pre-engineering eighth-graders

INDIANAPOLIS — Hanson Professional Services Inc.’s Indianapolis regional office recently donated pens and copies of a children’s book to pre-engineering eighth-graders at an Indiana school.

Hanson gave 250 company-branded pens and 250 copies of “Gong Gong and the P&L Railroad” by Hanson Civil Engineer Judy Dittmer, P.E., to students April 9 in Carrie McCune’s pre-engineering design and modeling class at South Dearborn Middle School in Aurora, Ind. The class is part of the Gateway to Technology program for middle school students from Project Lead the Way, a nonprofit organization and the nation’s leading provider of science, technology, engineering and mathematics curricular programs for middle schools and high schools. The students use computer-aided design and drafting software (CADD) and geometry and problem-solving skills, work in teams, keep engineering notebooks and learn project-management skills to design and develop product prototypes.

A grant provides funding for the curriculum at the school but does not cover the cost of regular classroom supplies, such as pens. The state of Indiana has implemented cuts to education funding, leaving teachers such as McCune without a budget. McCune emailed companies such as Hanson in search of donated supplies.

Jim Trachtman, regional vice president at Hanson’s Indianapolis office, coordinated the donation to the school.

“Anything that we can do to help students stay interested in engineering and technology is well worth the effort. I had the pleasure of visiting Ms. McCune’s classroom and it was terrific to see all of those bright students at South Dearborn Middle School,” Trachtman said.

Dittmer’s book chronicles the work Hanson and she performed on the $94 million Paducah and Louisville Railroad relocation design and construction project in Grand Rivers, Ky.
