Hanson receives Honor Award for work on Illinois Tollway project

CHICAGO — Hanson Professional Services Inc. recently was recognized for its work on the Cherry Valley Interchange reconfiguration with an Honor Award from the American Council of Engineering Companies of Illinois (ACEC-IL).  Honor Awards are given for exceptional engineering that meets the needs of the client and benefits the public welfare.

The Illinois Tollway’s Cherry Valley Interchange at the junction of the Jane Addams Memorial Tollway (I-90) and I-39 was notorious for traffic congestion and back-ups due to regional growth and increased traffic around Rockford, Ill.  The most significant challenge in this project was the construction of the new two-lane flyover ramp bridge, which required curved beams, skewed supports and a post-tensioned straddle pier.

Hanson’s project team greatly improved conditions for Tollway customers without significantly increasing the interchange footprint.  This allowed for higher operating speeds, increased capacity and safer operations, making a difference to tens of thousands of motorists each day.

Judges for the 2011 Engineering Excellence Awards Competition included Amr S. Elnashai, Ph.D., department head, civil and environmental engineering, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign; Lisa Mattingly, administrator of professional service, Capital Development Board; James Mayka, community and land revitalization branch Superfund division, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency; Scott Stitt, bureau chief of design and environment, Illinois Department of Transportation; Greg Stukel, deputy director of program controls/system integrity, Illinois Tollway; Somali Tomczak, senior manager of environmental and safety, NICOR.
