Hanson receives ACEC of Indiana award for sinkhole mitigation, runway rehabilitation

INDIANAPOLIS — Hanson Professional Services Inc. recently received recognition for a sinkhole mitigation and runway rehabilitation project in the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) of Indiana’s Engineering Excellence Awards.

Hanson is the recipient of a Merit Award for the project at Monroe County Airport in Bloomington, Ind. The two-runway facility sits on a type of terrain called karst, a landscape that is prone to forming sinkholes. In 2011, three sinkholes were discovered in the runway safety area and along the pavement of the airport’s main runway. Hanson provided oversight for geotechnical and geophysical testing, conducted an environmental assessment and topographical survey work and designed an environmentally friendly sinkhole mitigation and rehabilitation of the main runway and taxiways. With a 68-day time frame, the contractors worked around the clock to excavate more than 300,000 cubic yards of earth, mitigate the sinkholes and rehabilitate the pavement. Hanson provided around-the-clock construction administration and observation. The runway work was completed a few days ahead of schedule.

ACEC is a professional organization of 51 state and regional councils with members from more than 5,000 engineering firms across the U.S. The annual Engineering Excellence Awards recognizes outstanding achievements from member firms.

Hanson is a national, employee-owned consulting firm providing engineering, planning and allied services. The Indianapolis regional office is located at 7820 Innovation Blvd., Suite 200, Indianapolis, IN 46278. The office may be reached by phone at (317) 293-9024.
