Ball, Shipp named engineers of the year by ISPE Capital Chapter
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — Two engineers at Hanson Professional Services Inc.’s Springfield, Ill., headquarters recently were honored by the Capital Chapter of the Illinois Society of Professional Engineers (ISPE).
Jeff Ball, P.E., a senior vice president and infrastructure market principal, has received the Outstanding Engineer of the Year Award from the chapter. He joined Hanson in 1991, and as market principal, he develops and implements programs to achieve profitable growth, oversees staff and develops and maintains relationships with clients. An active member of ISPE, he was president of the chapter in 2000 and was named the organization’s Young Engineer of the Year in 1999 and Outstanding Chapter Member in 2006.
He also is a member and was president of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Central Illinois Section and its West Branch; in 2012, the section named him Engineer of the Year. He is a member of the National Society of Professional Engineers, the American Council of Engineering Companies of Illinois and the American Public Works Association. He serves on Downtown Springfield Inc.’s Board of Trustees and was named the organization’s Volunteer of the Year in 2013. He also is a member of the Greater Springfield Chamber of Commerce’s Board of Directors, the Illinois Municipal League and the Southern Illinois University at Carbondale College of Engineering Industry Advisory Board. In 2008, he received the Patriotic Employer award from the U.S. Department of Defense and the National Committee for Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve. He has a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. He is a licensed professional engineer in Illinois and Iowa.
Julie Shipp, P.E., a civil engineer, has been named the chapter’s Young Engineer of the Year. She joined the firm in 2008 and provides geometric layout and intersection design, document preparation and drainage analysis for roadway projects. She also performs precast concrete plant inspections for the National Precast Concrete Association.
She provides services for infrastructure projects, including roadways, streetscapes and sewers. She has worked on projects including the Capitol Avenue streetscape design and beautification in Springfield; the widening and reconstruction of Interstate 90 in Boone, Kane and McHenry counties in Illinois; and an environmental impact statement for the Illinois High-Speed Rail Chicago to St. Louis program. She is a project engineer for the Glenn Highway capacity improvements in Anchorage, Alaska, and a geometric and drainage designer for the Olympian Drive extension in Champaign, Ill., projects that have entered the construction phase. She also is a project engineer for the planned Stanford Avenue extension in Springfield.
Shipp is a member of ISPE’s Capital Chapter, for which she was president in 2013 and serves as the Scholarship Committee chair. She also is a member of the National Society of Professional Engineers and speaks to local students about her career and experiences in the industry. She earned a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from Bradley University. She is a licensed professional engineer in Illinois.
The awards are based on educational and engineering achievements, professional and technical society activities, civic and humanitarian activities and continuing professional competence. ISPE Capital Chapter award recipients will be honored Feb. 28 during the ISPE and ASCE E-Week Banquet at Erin’s Pavilion in Springfield.
