Engineering Inc. magazine features Springfield, Ill.’s Grow Our Own Minority Participation Program
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — The May/June issue of the American Council of Engineering Companies’ Engineering Inc. magazine features Springfield, Ill.’s Grow Our Own Minority Participation Program. The article, “Putting Young Minority Achievers on an Engineering Track,” focuses on how Grow Our Own encourages minority students to explore careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).
Implemented in 2013 by Hanson Professional Services Inc., the city of Springfield and Sangamon County, Illinois, the program’s goal is to foster interest in careers involving STEM by providing mentoring, education and job training opportunities. As the program’s manager, Hanson works with minority-based organizations, businesses, colleges and universities, the Illinois Department of Transportation and others to encourage students to participate in hands-on learning experiences, workshops, field trips and paid internships.
“Our objective is to identify as many opportunities as possible so that minority students can get excited about STEM and determine if it is a path they want to pursue for a future career. This program focuses on developing creative and challenging opportunities to encourage a motivated, talented pool of young people to work and build their careers in our community,” said Sergio “Satch” Pecori, P.E., Hanson’s president and CEO.
