Pecori receives Grainger College of Engineering alumni award

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — The Grainger College of Engineering, the engineering college of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC), has honored Sergio “Satch” Pecori, P.E., chairman and CEO of Hanson Professional Services Inc., with an Alumni Award for Distinguished Service for 2023.

Pecori, who received a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering and a master’s degree in geotechnical engineering, both from UIUC, was cited for “leadership in civil engineering consulting practice for more than 40 years; for transformative support of the Rail Transportation and Engineering Center; for commitment to diversity in engineering; and for advancing the business climate and infrastructure in Illinois.” The annual award recognizes alumni for their leadership, contributions to the field and service to society, the professional community and to UIUC, the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering or the college.

Pecori has served on the College of Engineering Advisory Board, the University of Illinois Foundation President’s Council and the University of Illinois Springfield’s (UIS) Business Advisory Council for the College of Business and Management. In 1999, he was presented with the Distinguished Alumnus Award from UIUC’s College of Civil Engineering. He is a distinguished chapter honor member of UIUC’s Chi Epsilon and was named an honorary Beta Gamma Sigma chapter member by the College of Business and Management at UIS. He joined Hanson in 1974 and is a licensed professional engineer in five states, including Illinois, and a licensed civil engineer and geotechnical engineer in California.

He has received several other recognitions during his career. In 2007, he was a finalist for the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award and was given the President’s Award for Outstanding Leadership and Dedication by the Greater Springfield Chamber of Commerce. In 2015, he received the Secretary of Defense Medal for Exceptional Public Service, the Illinois Society of Professional Engineers’ Illinois Award and the Boy Scouts of America Abraham Lincoln Council’s Trailblazer Award. In 2018, he was inducted into the National Academy of Construction. He was named a recipient of the Ellis Island Medal of Honor and the American Society of Civil Engineers’ (ASCE) Outstanding Projects and Leaders award in management in 2019. He also is a fellow of ASCE, the Society of American Military Engineers and the American Council of Engineering Companies.
