Decision support

Decision Optimization Technology

Planning is a big part of your success. At Hanson, we understand that preparing for the future involves innovation and cutting-edge technology, which is why we formed Decision Optimization Technology-United States (DOT-US), a partnership with Infrastructure Solutions (Software) Inc. (ISI). With DOT-US, we distribute and continually improve the Decision Optimization Technology (DOTTM) decision support solution, with the goal of proactively helping you visualize and pursue better maintenance and capital improvement plans for your businesses, projects and communities.

DOTTM intuitively manages the complexity of creating strategic asset management plans. It can simultaneously incorporate variables by using analytics to help you make smarter decisions. Under this U.S.-based partnership, DOT-US and our implementation partners provide customized DOT™ application configuration and integration, training and customer support, while working directly with you to improve your return on investment, align cross-asset projects, incorporate environmental, social and governance initiatives and make the most of your budget allocation.

With DOT-US, we offer a data-driven approach to help you make financial and socioeconomic decisions for maintaining, managing and improving your critical assets.

Planning and designing transmission tower foundations is a lengthy and expensive process. Standard practices for foundation planning and design often come with less-than-ideal budget and scheduling tradeoffs.

Over the years, our geotechnical and structural engineers have worked on numerous transmission line projects using typical foundation design methods: location-specific foundation design and what may be referred to as presumptive design. Location-specific design involves collecting soil borings at every proposed tower location, which reduces the need for contingency and lowers overall foundation construction costs but requires longer lead times for data collection and foundation design. Presumptive design entailsSPEED: subsurface prediction and expedited engineering design obtaining fewer borings, typically at critical structure locations and with various spacings, but results in foundation design grouping by location and can lead to overdesign based on the limited boring results, which results in higher foundation construction costs.

We know you need a better way, and we’ve developed a hybrid approach requiring less boring data that results in expedited schedules, flexible route planning and lower construction costs. Predictive transmission line foundation planning and design combines the benefits of individual and presumptive design by:

  • using data and machine learning technologies to predict foundation cost-sensitive soil conditions
  • significantly reducing the need for time-intensive field data collection and allowing for design independent of property access
  • combining anticipated soil conditions with project-proven, database-driven methodology to efficiently complete parametric studies and alternatives analyses and generate planning- and design-level foundation designs
  • reducing contingencies and construction costs compared to projects that use presumptive design

Let us help you realize the cost and schedule benefits that artificial intelligence (AI) and database-driven foundation design can bring to your transmission line planning and design processes.
