Mahomet, Illinois, is a growing community of more than 10,000 residents. When the village constructed a new junior high school, the time came to build a new roadway to accommodate the growth.

One of the main arteries through Mahomet, U.S. 150 (South Mahomet Road) accommodates student pick-ups and drop-offs each morning and afternoon, along with other commuters. To relieve the resulting traffic congestion, village leadership voted to extend South Mahomet Road across a set of Norfolk Southern (NS) railroad tracks and connect it to a roundabout leading to Churchill Road, which runs south of the junior high building.

Hanson’s engineering team supported all phases of the project, including extending South Mahomet Road from Churchill Road to Prairieview Road, with a roundabout at the intersection of Mahomet and Purnell Road. Hanson also prepared project development studies, design plans, specifications and estimates for a new at-grade crossing of the NS tracks, a bike path, a sidewalk and drainage, as well as Illinois Commerce Commission and NS coordination, environmental studies, an EcoCAT submittal, a special waste screening, traffic studies and roadway geometric design.
