The U.S Army Corps of Engineers Omaha District employed Hanson to provide a complete revision to its Unified Facilities Criteria (UFC) 4-860-01, which establishes guidelines and standards to promote consistency and quality in the planning, design, construction and maintenance of military railroad facilities.
Hanson’s multidisciplinary team for the UFC revision included project management, railroad design, bridge structural engineering, geotechnical engineering and hydraulic/hydrologic engineering specialists. The team collaborated to provide technical criteria for railroad design and rehabilitation projects.

All the UFC chapters were revised to incorporate advances in design practices and materials. Significant enhancements included drainage design criteria; information on the use of composite, steel and concrete railroad ties; updated bridge design criteria; and the latest industry standards.
The update was completed according to UFC 1-300-01, Criteria Format Standard. This required Hanson’s team to reorganize much of the information and rewrite all the text to match the required mood, tense and voice. Hanson also added hyperlinked bookmarks for the table of contents to allow prompt navigation through the final PDF document.
