With a background in civil and transportation engineering, Matt Heyen’s early exposure to roadway design, utility management and environmental studies laid the groundwork for his involvement in power generation and transportation infrastructure. Now serving as Hanson’s power operations lead and an assistant vice president, Matt leads projects including environmental studies, land and easement acquisition, detailed design, construction document preparation and construction observation.
Matt’s experience encompasses a wide range of infrastructure projects, including geometric design, utility management, roadway design, high-speed railroad studies, pre-engineering and feasibility studies, storm sewer design, sanitary sewer design and project management. He has worked on projects across the U.S., including tiered environmental impact studies for the replacement of the eastbound span of the McClugage Bridge in Peoria and Tazewell counties in Illinois; electric and gas transmission line siting and land acquisition; and site development for wind and solar farms. He has also provided valuable leadership on large-scale projects, including the award-winning Interstate 74 reconstruction, Chicago-to-St. Louis Tier 1 EIS and Ameren Illinois AMI projects, the MacArthur Boulevard extension in Springfield, Ameren’s Knox County Connector and Springfield’s multimillion-dollar Capitol Avenue reconstruction project.
In addition to his engineering experience, Matt uses his private pilot’s license to operate drones for aerial data collection, adding a specialized dimension to Hanson’s capabilities in project siting, documentation and analysis.
Matt’s contributions to the field have been recognized with several honors, including the Illinois Society of Professional Engineers’ 2013 Young Engineer of the Year Award and the American Society of Civil Engineers Central Illinois Section’s 2014 Young Civil Engineer of the Year Award. He is an active member of the Illinois Society of Professional Engineers, National Society of Professional Engineers, American Society of Civil Engineers and American Public Works Association.
IN MATT’S WORDS

computer model come to life.”
