Kipkoech Chepkoit, P.E., Ph.D., F.ASCE, is an assistant vice president and the chief geotechnical engineer at Hanson, collaborating with Hanson’s geotechnical group to manage projects that require geotechnical exploration, report preparation and modeling, the design and analysis of complex geotechnical problems including soil-structure interaction, forensic investigations and the preparation of construction and bid documents, as well as engineering during construction. He was elected to Hanson’s board of directors in 2022.
Prior to joining Hanson in 2010, Kip provided geotechnical consulting work for numerous U.S. Army Corps of Engineers districts. During his time with Hanson, Kip has led geotechnical services for prominent projects, such as Interstate 74 through Moline, Illinois, associated with the new Mississippi River bridge replacement in Moline and Bettendorf, Iowa; the design of a flood control system in Cedar Rapids, Iowa; the CapX2020 Mississippi River transmission line crossing near Alma, Wisconsin; the sinkhole repair and runway rehabilitation at Monroe County Airport in Bloomington, Indiana; multiple transportation department and railroad projects; and Ameren Corp.’s Illinois Rivers Project. He is also the geotechnical reviewer for power transmission and substation projects, wind turbine projects and railroad projects.
Throughout each project, Kip provides technical leadership, project management and mentorship, working closely with clients and internal teams to develop geotechnical solutions for deep and shallow foundations, seismic evaluations, retaining structures, slope stability, soil stabilization, pavement systems and tunnel engineering. His experience extends to complex geotechnical modeling and forensic investigations that promote resilient and cost-effective designs for critical infrastructure.
Kip is a fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers, and he is an active member of the Association of State Dam Safety Officials, National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying, Society of American Military Engineers and the Industrial and Professional Advisory Council at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (SIUE). He also is an adjunct professor at SIUE, teaching geotechnical engineering courses. His contributions to education and the industry earned him SIUE’s Outstanding Service to the School of Engineering award in 2019 and its Outstanding Adjunct Professor in the School of Engineering award in 2024.
