Jim is a senior geotechnical engineer with extensive experience in subsurface investigations; conducting stability analyses, inspections and evaluations; designing dams and embankments; and providing design recommendations for shallow and deep foundations. His on-site engineering services have taken him to 35 of the 50 U.S. states and worldwide, including projects in Colombia, Mexico, Equatorial Guinea and South Korea

Since joining Hanson in 2000, Jim has led and supported a wide range of geotechnical and forensic engineering investigations. His work includes performing geotechnical investigations; providing foundation, geotechnical and seismic design recommendations for buildings, bridges, dams, landfills, tanks, highways, railways and earth slopes; conducting safety inspections for dams and levees; performing slope stability analyses and seepage analyses for dams, levees and excavations; providing engineering forensic investigations; and managing a geotechnical laboratory, along with construction inspection services and construction inspections.

Jim has served as a geotechnical engineer for numerous key projects, including the Southern Illinois University School of Medicine Simmons Cancer Institute; the Springfield Rail Improvements Project and the Stanford Avenue extension in Springfield, Illinois; geotechnical and subsurface investigations for several hundred miles of transmission lines; transmission line crossings of the Mississippi, Illinois and Missouri rivers; substations for Ameren and Invenergy; multiple nationwide projects for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers; multiple nationwide projects for railways; the replacement of the Interstate 74 bridge over the Mississippi River in the Quad Cities of Illinois and Iowa; and the replacement of the McClugage Bridge on U.S. Route 150 over the Illinois River in Peoria, Illinois.

He also assisted the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s Public Assistance Program for Hurricane Maria disaster recovery efforts, serving in Puerto Rico for nine months as a joint site inspector and program delivery manager.

Jim is a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, the Association of State Dam Safety Officials, the American Society of Testing and Materials and the Deep Foundations Institute.
