Hanson strives to be proactive and practical, providing innovative and inspiring ideas for our clients, projects and communities. One way we are doing this is through a partnership with a Canadian software company — Infrastructure Solutions Inc. (ISI) — that has developed an asset management and capital planning software, known as DOT™ (Decision Optimization Technology), to help municipal, county and state clients with their capital improvement plans now and for future years. This U.S.-based partnership, called Decision Optimization Technology–United States (DOT–US), works directly with clients to meet their infrastructure capital planning needs and provides visual and analytical tools to expedite client success.

“With this partnership, we can help our clients with a data-driven approach so they can make the best possible infrastructure financial and socio-economic decisions,” Hanson Chairman and CEO Sergio “Satch” Pecori said when Hanson announced the partnership in March 2021.

Hanson Assistant Vice President and Chief Innovation Officer Kurt Bialobreski, P.E., PTOE, says the DOT™ software can help clients recognize, develop and promote their short- and long-term capital planning projects and budgets and plan essential, cost-effective projects that will benefit their communities and stakeholders.

Getting off the ground with asset management

We know airport directors, maintenance managers and engineers face budgetary and technology constraints that make the management of their critical infrastructure and capital assets a difficult, ongoing process. In many cases, because of the fast-moving realm of airport operations and maintenance, airport staff find themselves in a reactive mode when it comes to managing their assets. However, progressive airports are beginning to adopt a long-term view of asset management, based on their return on investment and managing their total cost of asset ownership. To support their plans, airports need a tool that allows them to make asset investment decisions based on scientific and sound financial considerations and then easily and effectively communicate these decisions to stakeholders.

The DOT™ software intuitively manages the complexity of creating strategic asset management plans. It can simultaneously incorporate variables to help clients develop plans based on fluctuating budgets, shifting strategic priorities, socio-economic expectations, risk and safety considerations and cross-departmental initiatives. The DOT™ software allows for plan prioritization and offers an easy-to-understand capital and maintenance planning tool for infrastructure and asset management. The software includes planning and analysis capabilities for stormwater, structural, transportation, wastewater and watermain assets, and the DOT-US team is developing an additional module for airport asset management.

Could the DOT advantage elevate your airport?

In support of a broader asset management perspective at airports, a decision-based support tool like DOT™ could allow airports to minimize the cost of asset ownership and provide the return on investment that airport stakeholders desire. The DOT™ aviation module, under development, can analyze and produce customizable visuals on a variety of assets, such as leasable properties; terminal area concessions; passenger holding areas; aircraft parking positions; airline gates; jet bridges; ticketing counters; baggage areas; baggage-handling systems; airfield and non-airfield pavements; security fencing, gates and equipment; airfield lights, signs and signals; electrical vault equipment; drainage structures; hangars and doors; support buildings; fuel tanks and pumps; aircraft rescue and firefighting equipment; bridge structures; roofs; heating, ventilating and air-conditioning equipment; and non-airfield signage.

From an aviation standpoint, which aspects of asset management matter most to you? What are your biggest maintenance challenges, your growth goals and your budget considerations? We’re looking for an airport client partner to help us build and test this software. Your needs and vision could help us shape the functionality of the DOT™ aviation module, plus you could enjoy the benefits of minimal setup costs and a discounted annual maintenance fee.
