Selfridge Munitions Facility engineering design

Project Summary

As a result of the Base Realignment and Closure Act (BRAC), Selfridge Air National Guard Base, located in Detroit, Mich., has fielded additional A-10 aircraft. Due to the additional aircraft fielding, the base needed to replace two existing munition facilities and add an additional facility as upgrades to the base’s munitions facility.

As a consultant to Atkins, Hanson completed design plans for three new structures and the associated site work.  These structures replaced the existing munitions administration facility and the existing munitions maintenance shop.

The team designed a new 4,000-square-foot missile maintenance bay, a 7,530-square-foot munitions administration facility – tripling the space from the previous facility, and a 3,000-square-foot munitions maintenance shop.  Hanson’s team designed the facilities in accordance with current Anti-Terrorism/Force Protection measures.

The project included several challenges including pier foundations due to poor soil conditions, wetland area avoidance and mitigation, and explosive setback requirements due to close proximity to the hot cargo pad. Construction observation services also were part of this project.
