USACE hydrographic surveys

Project Summary

Hanson provides field and automated hydrographic surveys for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Louis District.  This district is designated as the Corps’ center for geospatial expertise.  Hanson has provided professional services for the following delivery orders:

Dredge surveys of the Upper and Lower Mississippi River and Illinois River, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Louis District, multiple locations in Missouri and Illinois. Hanson performed pre- and post-dredge hydrographic surveys on the Mississippi and Illinois rivers in connection with potential dredging areas. Fifteen locations were surveyed. Soundings were taken along range lines every 250 feet and were referenced to the low water reference plane or minimum pool elevation. Data was provided to the Corps in 3-D CADD digital and Intergraph CADD formats.

Mel Price Lock and Dam Lock gate/anchorage surveys, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Louis District, Alton, Ill. Hanson surveyed existing miter gate primary anchorages and measured the deflection of the miter gates along several locations on the skin plates of the lock gate at Mel Price Lock and Dam, near Alton, Ill. The government was repairing damage incurred to the lock and dam as a result of a boating accident.

Calhoun Point horizontal and vertical control surveys (Phase 2), U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Louis District, Calhoun County, Ill. Hanson performed surveys to place two sets of horizontal control points, one set at each end of eight designated areas specified by the Corps. Surveyors also set 12 benchmarks, for which we provided references and distances from each location. Elevations reference the NAD27 Missouri East Zone Coordinate System and National Geodetic Vertical Datum (NGVD 1929 U.S.) in survey feet.

Hydrographic scour surveys at five lock and dam locations, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Louis District, multiple locations in Missouri and Illinois. Scour surveys at lock and dam locations within the St. Louis District boundaries were performed by Hanson at Lock and Dam #24 (Clarksville, Mo.); Lock and Dam #25 (Winfield, Mo.); Mel Price Lock and Dam (Alton, Ill.); Locks #27 (Granite City, Ill.); and Kaskaskia Lock and Dam (Chester, Ill.). These hydrographic surveys were necessary for monitoring possible scour areas immediately upstream and downstream from the lock and dam structures. Our scope of services also included surveys of the inside of the lock chambers.

Structural stability assessment surveys at five lock and dam projects, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Louis District, multiple locations in Missouri and Illinois. Stability of structural features at five district lock and dam projects was determined, and each structure was assessed for potential problem areas. Electronic Distance Measurement (EDM) survey equipment was used to detect movement. The locations included Lock and Dam #24 (Clarksville, Mo.); Lock and Dam #25 (Winfield, Mo.); Locks #27 (Granite City, Ill.); Kaskaskia Lock and Dam (Chester, Ill.); and Melvin Price Locks and Dam (Alton, Ill.).

Hydrographic scour surveys at lake projects, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Louis District, multiple locations in Missouri and Illinois. Hanson participated in monitoring the spillway channels to assess the performance of scour protection and to detect potential problems adjacent to the spillway structural features. This is part of the Periodic Inspection Program that provides for evaluations of stability and operational adequacy for district projects. These locations included Cannon Dam (on Salt River near Perryville, Mo.); Carlyle Lake Dam (on Kaskaskia River at Carlyle, Ill.); Rend Lake Dam (on the Big Muddy River at Benton, Ill.); Lake Shelbyville Dam (on the Kaskaskia River at Shelbyville, Ill.), and Wappapello Lake (on the St. Francis River at Poplar Bluff, Mo.).
