South Florida Water Management District – headquarters building
Project Summary
The Florida Department of Management Services selected Hanson to design two buildings at the South Florida Water Management District’s 27-acre headquarters in West Palm Beach, Fla.
Hanson served as both the architect and Engineer of Record for the project. Hanson’s team provided programming, master planning, site design and building design for the existing headquarters campus in Palm Beach County. The 120,000-square-foot headquarters building was programmed and designed to accommodate the Water Resources, Planning, Ecosystems Restoration, Office of Business Resources and Information Technology departments. The project also included a 10,000-square-foot Central Storage Facility.
Considerations for this project included:
- reconfiguring the district’s headquarters site utilization to accommodate a future building,
- providing facility and site improvements to improve the long-term asset value and marketability of the property,
- offering flexible interior designs with consideration for future occupancy changes and enhancement of the functionality of the interior spaces, and
- providing additional parking spaces to ease site congestion and locating a future parking structure.
Site development included demolition of existing structures and construction of the new buildings – all within the confines of multiple existing buildings and infrastructure at the district’s headquarters.
The team incorporated sustainable design features in the project. Concrete and asphalt were recycled during demolition. Some lighting fixtures also were recycled. The building design addressed energy efficiency needs with building orientation on the site as well as sun shading shelves for sun and building temperature measures.
The new office building includes a conference center; data and communication center; office and support space for the district’s administration and department management personnel; a kitchen/food service area; and dining area. The central receiving facility includes a 5,000-square-foot graphics and publications area for printing, reproduction and storage for the district’s publications.
