Simmons Cancer Institute
Project Summary
Hanson, as the prime consultant, and health-care specialist BSA LifeStructures of Indianapolis combined their experience to design the $17 million state-of-the-art Simmons Cancer Institute at the Southern Illinois University School of Medicine in Springfield, Illinois. Hanson's contributions to this project included project management; structural, civil and geotechnical engineering services; and construction administration and observation.
The design for the 63,000-square-foot cancer institute incorporates an open two-story lobby. The building's first floor features chemotherapy suites and two clinics designed specifically for SIU's organ site working groups, cancer specialists and sub-specialist teams.
The first-floor clinic offers eight exam rooms and two procedure rooms designed for patients who have prostate and gastrointestinal cancers. In the cancer institute's second clinic, SIU's cancer specialists treat patients who have general, lung and head and neck cancers in 12 exam rooms and two procedure rooms.
The first floor also includes a resource library, a support group meeting room and a multi-purpose meeting room designed to accommodate public programs and medical meetings. On the second floor, patients will find the cancer institute's Women's Cancer Care Center, an area devoted specifically to the treatment of breast and gynecologic cancers. The Women's Cancer Care Center features eight exam rooms and areas for diagnostic imaging procedures.
The second floor features offices for administrative staff, physician faculty and nurse coordinators. Additionally, this area houses an outreach center focusing on activities in downstate Illinois, such as epidemiology studies and public and physician education, plus a clinical trials office that coordinates research involving patients, including national drug trials.
