SSM Health Good Samaritan Hospital
Project Summary
Hanson commissioned a new 359,000-square-foot, 134-bed hospital for SSM Health Good Samaritan Hospital in Mount Vernon, Illinois. The new hospital replaced an older facility and was part of a $237 million medical campus that included a 141,000-square-foot medical office building and an outpatient surgery center.
The hospital consisted of five floors and a garden level, a dedicated central energy plant with boilers, chillers and emergency generators and numerous green design features promoting sustainability and energy efficiency.
The design and construction process included innovations such as room designs featuring a short distance between patient beds and restrooms to reduce the risk of patients falling. Decentralized nursing stations reduce the distance between patients and caregivers, and family zones in each private room allow families to stay overnight with loved ones.
Innovative construction techniques included offsite prefabrication of wall sections of patient bathrooms and patient room headwalls. The wall sections included electrical and plumbing systems and were delivered to the project site for installation and final connections. The prefabrication effort reduced project costs, schedule and worksite congestion because the work was performed offsite in a climate-controlled warehouse. Building information modeling (BIM) was used to design and draw the construction documents for this project.
