Liquefied natural gas tank projects

Project Summary

Since 1969, Hanson has provided services for liquefied natural gas tank projects around the world, including a project in Equatorial Guinea.

Hanson performed exploratory geotechnical borings on-site and critical settlement analysis of the soil-structure interaction to model the performance of the tank structure during design of the liquefied natural gas (LNG) tanks.  We also performed field testing during foundation preparation.

Hanson visited the site during construction of the LNG tanks, which measure about 240 feet in diameter and are 130 feet tall.  The tanks are constructed to store 136,000 cubic meters (36 million gallons) of LNG under pressure and at low temperatures.

We provided independent consultation regarding geotechnical issues associated with the design and construction of a proposed 22 million-gallon LNG tank to be supported on 300-foot thick geologically recent alluvial deposits.  We evaluated the subsurface exploration program previously conducted by a French firm and the geotechnical laboratory testing and foundation recommendations provided by a British firm.  We also provided independent calculations, which the client used to confirm design assumptions before construction could proceed.
