FEMA technical assistance contract

Project Summary

Hanson’s commitment to assist the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) during natural or man-made disasters in the U.S. is rooted in an indefinite delivery contract with Fluor Enterprises Inc.  Hanson, along with a variety of industry-leading companies and consultants, contributes to a well-rounded team, offering more than 50 professional and technical disciplines grouped in five basic categories.  These categories include facilities and infrastructure; environmental and biological; financial; insurance; and management and support.

Together, these consultants provide FEMA with essential capacity and capability following a disaster to mobilize personnel, helping to restore governmental operations and offset the costs of emergency services and repairs to public facilities and infrastructure.

Under this FEMA contract, Hanson has mobilized staff to Alabama, California, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, New Jersey, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Texas, Utah and West Virginia.

When Hanson’s FEMA assignment coordinator was contacted, he had about 24 hours to respond, assigning engineers, planners, public involvement specialists and more. 

Hanson employees selected for the FEMA assignment completed FEMA-sponsored online and/or classroom training in public assistance.  As a result of this training, many employees served as public assistance coordinators and project officers, working directly with FEMA to aid in recovery efforts. 

More than 40 employees from Hanson and its partner firms responded, accepting months-long assignments and embracing the anticipated challenges.  They left their families, jobs and lives behind to help hurricane victims.

Some employees helped hurricane victims through the process of applying for federal assistance.  Others completed damage assessments at schools, universities, hospitals and numerous public facilities.

After the initial emergency phases, Hanson employees also assisted with FEMA’s long-term community recovery efforts.  Team members helped with the development of planning documents and assisted with the coordination and organization of more than 50 public meetings.  These meetings helped organizers communicate recovery goals to state and federal agencies.
