Brown marks 10 years of service at Hanson

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — Kirk Brown, P.E., recently celebrated 10 years of service at Hanson Professional Services Inc. Brown is a senior policy adviser serving the infrastructure market at Hanson’s Springfield, Ill., headquarters.

Brown joined Hanson in 2003. He has been involved in several projects, including environmental impact statements for the Illinois High-Speed Rail Chicago to St. Louis program and Springfield high-speed rail corridor study; Capital Improvement Programs for Springfield, Macomb, Ill., and Kansas City, Mo.; an economic corridor and freight study for the Springfield-Sangamon County Regional Planning Commission; and a feasibility study for a multi-modal transportation hub for the Springfield Mass Transit District.

Prior to joining Hanson, he spent nearly 35 years with the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT), working in airport and public transportation planning and highway construction, design and planning. Brown also was transportation secretary for 12 years. In that capacity, Brown directed the agency and was responsible for planning, developing, maintaining, funding and operating the state’s transportation network.

While serving as transportation secretary, Brown was chairman of the Chicago Area Transportation Study and the Metropolitan Planning Organization for Chicago. He also was on the Illinois Tollway board of directors.

Brown received the Civil Government Award from the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) in 2002 and the Amtrak President’s Award State Partner in 2000. He also received the Engineering Management Award from the Illinois Society of Professional Engineers. He is a member of Chi Epsilon Civil Engineering Fraternity and National Society of Professional Engineers. He is a lifetime member of the Illinois Association of Highway Engineers and Illinois Public Airports Association and is an honorary member of the Illinois Association of County Engineers.

Brown received his bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from Vanderbilt University in 1968. He is a licensed professional engineer in Illinois and Mississippi.
