Hanson’s work on overpass, park bridge receive state-level awards
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — Hanson Professional Services Inc. recently received two awards for project of the year from the American Public Works Association’s (APWA) Illinois chapter.
Hanson received a Project of the Year Award in the transportation category’s $10 million to $100 million division for its contributions to an overpass project in Galesburg, Ill. A new grade separation structure was needed to alleviate traffic and safety issues at West Main Street’s intersection with BNSF Railway Co. tracks. Hanson provided project-development and planning services, including surveying, alignment/profile studies, environmental and traffic studies, geotechnical and structural design, lighting and public involvement. The Don Moffitt Overpass is a 270-foot-long, two-span bridge over the railroad tracks and Cedar Creek and features lanes for pedestrians and cyclists. New overpasses are planned for two other intersections in downtown Galesburg.
Hanson’s work on the replacement of the south-entrance road bridge at Allerton Park and Retreat Center was given a Project of the Year Award in the transportation category’s $2 million to $10 million division. The bridge in the park, which is located near Monticello, Ill., was constructed in the early 1900s and closed in 2001 after an inspection determined it was no longer safe to use. Hanson provided engineering and environmental services, which included preliminary planning; coordinating studies on threatened and endangered species and archaeological and environmental studies; and bid-document preparation. The new bridge features improved roadways and guardrails. The project also included upgrades to about 3 miles of roadway in the park.
