Hanson to discuss its geothermal design at Glenwood Elementary School tour
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — Hanson Professional Services Inc. will discuss its energy-efficient design for heating and air conditioning from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 21, at Glenwood Elementary School in Chatham, Ill. The event is part of the Illinois Geothermal Tour, organized by the Geothermal Alliance of Illinois (GAOI). The tour is free and open to the public.
The Illinois Geothermal Tour is a series of open-house events at homes, businesses and schools statewide that use geothermal systems. Glenwood Elementary, 1401 E. Plummer Blvd., was selected for the tour because of its new geothermal variable refrigerant flow (VRF) system that is part of a 20,000-square-foot addition. Constructed in 2011, the school uses a geothermal heat-pump system to heat and cool its existing single-story, 74,000-square-foot building. The geothermal VRF systems will serve 12 classrooms in three expanded wings.
Hanson provided energy modeling, electrical, mechanical and structural engineering services and designed the school’s geothermal system in 2011 and its new geothermal VRF system. Hanson also has completed various energy projects at other school buildings within the Ball-Chatham school district.
Hanson’s Chief Mechanical Engineer and GAOI Board Member Matt Slager, P.E., LEED® AP, will be at the open house to talk about the Glenwood Elementary geothermal project and answer questions about the project and geothermal energy systems.
“This is a great opportunity to learn more about commercial-scale geothermal systems and see a side-by-side comparison of unitary loop geothermal heat pumps and geothermal VRF systems. I would encourage any building owner looking for cost-effective ways to save money on their utilities to stop by for a look,” Slager said.
