Hanson provides design engineering for Phase 2 of Union Pacific Railroad’s CREATE Project B2
CHICAGO — Hanson Professional Services Inc. recently provided Phase 2 design engineering services for the Union Pacific Railroad (UP) as part of the Chicago Region Environmental and Transportation Efficiency (CREATE) program. During Phase 2, Hanson designed the Beltway 2 (B2) segment, a 3.5-mile portion of the CREATE program’s new beltway infrastructure.
Hanson designed a new third mainline track and a railroad bridge over Addison Creek as well as a skewed through-plate girder flyover on a curved alignment from the IHB mainline to UP’s westbound mainline track. The flyover crosses the UP mainline tracks and connects with the new third mainline track and with UP’s Proviso Yard in Northlake, Ill. Hanson’s design also allowed for increasing the connection track operation speed between the UP and IHB from 10 mph to 25 mph.
This project shifts UP’s mainlines between Provo Junction and Mannheim Road, provides new connections to Proviso Yard on the east and west ends, and modifies two Metra passenger stations at Berkeley and Bellwood to accommodate the new third mainline track. Construction on the B2 segment began in late 2010 and is planned for completion in late 2012.
“The B2 project is important to UP because it improves the operating efficiency of freight trains in and out of Proviso Yard and still allows Metra’s commuter trains to maintain their schedule,” says Bradley Randall, P.E., Hanson’s project manager.
