Hanson named finalist in international Bentley Be Inspired Award for document management practices

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — Bentley Systems Inc. recently recognized Hanson Professional Services Inc. – a national, employee-owned engineering, architecture, planning and allied services consulting firm headquartered in Springfield, Ill. – as an international finalist for a Bentley Be Inspired Award in the Connecting Project Teams category.  Bentley acknowledged Hanson’s work for a customized document management system developed for the Interstate 74 Mississippi River Crossing Corridor – a $1.4 billion joint project by the Illinois and Iowa Departments of Transportation connecting Moline, Ill., and Bettendorf, Iowa. This 7-mile-long corridor project includes realigning and replacing the existing Mississippi River Bridge, reconstructing six interchanges, enhancing local roads, and improving transit connections.

Document management complexities of the project included two clients, each with different computer-aided design and drafting (CAD) standards and file-naming requirements; coordination with three cities, two counties, and multiple state and local agencies; a 700-person project team that included 20 sub-consultant firms with locations across the U.S.; approximately 30,000 critical project documents; and a two-week start-up time to create the document management system.

In addition to providing engineering design services for one of three project sections, Hanson’s CAD Administrator Sean Keene led the project’s document management system – implementing, hosting, administering and maintaining the system using a custom-designed software solution using Bentley Systems Inc.’s ProjectWise and Project WebParts with Microsoft’s SharePoint.  The solution provided one single source to access all project information from virtually any location with an internet connection, and it used a Microsoft Windows appearance to provide the most familiar, user-friendly interface.

“Managing documents with the ProjectWise and SharePoint system helped save time by allowing team members to access project documents easily from anywhere.  It also allowed us to keep the project progressing and on track,” says Ron Meyer, consultant coordinator with the Iowa Department of Transportation.

“The ability to utilize the same files – working simultaneously – was invaluable toward maintaining consistency, accuracy and keeping the project schedule on track,” says David Morrill, project manager with the prime consultant firm, Alfred Benesch and Co.

Hanson’s President and CEO Sergio “Satch” Pecori, P.E., ExecEng, adds, “It was an honor for Hanson Professional Services Inc. to be selected as an international finalist in the Bentley Be Inspired Awards.  This awards program recognizes the cutting-edge, best practices in document management, which is a critical factor when clients select consultants in the digital age.  Hanson is proud to be a global leader in the technical consulting field, and our employees enjoy the challenge of developing customized document management solutions for our clients, providing clients with peace of mind for their project documents.”

The Be Inspired Awards, held Nov. 13-14, 2012, in Amsterdam, Netherlands, showcased excellence and innovation in the design, construction and operations of architecture and engineering infrastructure projects around the world. This awards program was open to all Bentley software users.

Bentley will feature the project in its annual publication The Year in Infrastructure and its online Be Inspired Project Portfolios. The Year in Infrastructure is distributed in print to more than 150,000 professionals worldwide.
