Hanson receives Special Achievement Award for work on Coffeen Power Plant water supply project

Text

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — Hanson Professional Services Inc. recently was honored for its work on Ameren Energy Resources’ Coffeen Power Plant water supply project in Coffeen, Ill.  The firm received a Special Achievement Award from the American Council of Engineering Companies of Illinois (ACEC-IL).  Special Achievement Awards recognize worthy projects as well as the engineer and client/owner for achieving engineering excellence.

Ameren Energy Resources selected Hanson to assist in identifying potential water resources to help sustain current power plant operations and operate a new gas desulphurization system, reducing environmental impacts, and developing a workable solution that would meet the plant’s operational needs.

During this project, Hanson conducted detailed lake water-level modeling and a supplemental water supply study as well as provided permitting, design and construction-related services for the design and construction of a new dam gate structure on East Fork Shoal Creek and a new pump station to transfer water from the creek to supplement Coffeen Lake.

Permitting was crucial for this project, and Ameren Energy Resources and Hanson worked together to submit a joint permit application to three government agencies, including the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Illinois Environmental Protection Agency and Illinois Department of Natural Resources.  This project is the first-of-its-kind in Illinois — the first gate structure to be permitted on a stream in the state.  It was completed in August 2010.

Judges for the 2012 Engineering Excellence Awards Competition included Farhad Ansari, Ph.D., professor and head of the University of Illinois at Chicago’s Civil and Materials Engineering Department; Greg Stukel, P.E., deputy director of program controls/system integrity, Illinois Tollway; Jim Jerozal, general manager of energy efficiency for Nicor Gas; Aaron Carlson, P.E., LEED AP, project manager, U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs; Roger Less, P.E., chief, design branch, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Rock Island District; and Scott Stitt, P.E., bureau chief of design and environment, Illinois Department of Transportation.
