Hanson employees help Auburn fifth grade class win regional Rube Goldberg competition

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — Students in Mrs. Campbell’s fifth grade class at Auburn Elementary School in Auburn, Ill., recently won the regional Rube Goldberg competition held at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.  Hanson’s Steven Brown, EIT, engineer intern, and Edward Madaus, senior technician, served as the class’ mentors as part of the Engineer in the Classroom program, volunteering more than 18 hours with the students.

The Rube Goldberg competition – named for the Pulitzer Prize winning cartoonist, sculptor and author – consists of an intricate mechanized invention that takes a simple task and makes it extraordinarily complicated.  The class’ project, titled, “Take Me Out to the Ballgame,” was able to open the cover of a book and then turn one of its pages through an 18-step process.

Mrs. Campbell’s class expressed their appreciation for the help Brown and Madaus provided saying, “with their guidance, we created the ‘Take Me Out to the Ballgame’ Rube Goldberg and brought home a first place trophy…”
