Emergency bridge replacement wins two ENR Midwest awards

Engineering News-Record (ENR) magazine announced two awards of merit for the emergency replacement of Norfolk Southern Corp.’s collapsed bridge in Missouri in ENR Midwest’s Best Projects Awards.

Norfolk Southern, Hanson, Massman Construction Co., Hayes Drilling Inc. and Coreslab Structures Inc. were recognized with the Award of Merit Small Project and the Award of Merit for Excellence in Safety on a Small Project.

The team worked together to help Norfolk Southern quickly rebuild the bridge over the Grand River near Brunswick, Missouri, after the rails were cut last year to relieve pressure caused by flooding and debris and to prevent further damage to the rail line. Four spans and three piers were swept away in minutes. The work was finished in 27 days — half the time of the originally estimated 56-day schedule. The project had no lost-time accidents and no recordable injuries — in fact, there were zero first-aid cases. The project’s safety measures included daily “Take 5” crew meetings, flotation devices when workers were near the water, handrails, fall protection and a full-time safety professional.
