John Nelson, P.E.
John Nelson is a vice president and senior project manager. He joined the company in 1999 as a project manager, was named a vice president in 2007, and oversees the operations, programs and services of the Chicago regional office as well as serving as Hanson’s client champion for the Illinois Tollway.
John is an experienced project and program manager for large, complex highway and bridge projects. He has managed large, multidisciplined teams and successfully delivered large, complex interstate and tollway reconstruction projects using innovative delivery methods to meet accelerated project schedules.
He is the design corridor manager for the Illinois Tollway’s Central Tri-State Tollway (Interstate 294) master plan project and has managed numerous other projects, including the reconstruction and widening of a 3.6-mile section of the South Tri-State Tollway in Cook County, Illinois; the widening and reconstruction of a 22-mile section of I-90 (Jane Addams Memorial Tollway) from Genoa Road to Illinois Route 47 in Boone, McHenry and Kane counties in Illinois; and the design of the reconstruction of I-74 through Moline, Illinois, associated with the Mississippi River bridge replacement in Moline and Bettendorf, Iowa, a project that has entered the construction phase.
John is an active participant with the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC), has served on the ACEC-Illinois board of directors since 2012, and is serving as chairman of the board for 2018−19. He also is a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, the Illinois Road and Transportation Builders Association, the Illinois Society of Professional Engineers and the Institute of Transportation Engineers.
