Kirk
Brown, former IDOT
secretary, joins Hanson
SPRINGFIELD,
ILL. Kirk Brown, former secretary of the Illinois Department
of Transportation, has joined Hanson Professional Services Inc.
He will be providing assistance in business development, project
management and provide technical assistance for transportation
and transit services. His focus will be to assist Hanson with transportation
markets, including light rail and commuter rail, major municipal
projects, federal agency projects and departments of transportation
outside of Illinois.
Brown,
who directed the state agency since 1991, spent nearly 35 years
with IDOT before retiring at the end of 2002. He began his career
in transportation in 1968, working on a broad range of projects,
from airport and public transportation planning, as well as highway
planning, design and construction. He is recognized nationally for
his contributions to the transportation industry. Notable projects
while at IDOT include:
Reconstruction
of the Kennedy and Stevenson Expressways in Chicago
Securing the first multiyear contract with Amtrak in the nation
to continue rail passenger service between downstate communities
and Chicago through June 2000 at a reasonable cost to the state
Completion of the $130 million Hillside Strangler Interchange in
northern Illinois in record time.
A licensed professional engineer, Brown earned a bachelors
degree from Vanderbilt University.
On
the national level, he received the Civil Government Award from
the American Society of Civil Engineers in 2002. Brown also received
the Amtrak Presidents Award State Partner 2000 and the
Engineering Management Award from the Illinois Society of Professional
Engineers. He was awarded honorary membership status in the Illinois
Association of County Engineers and is a lifetime member in the
Illinois Public Airport Association.
