Minority Participation Plan
Minority Participation Plan

Hanson is helping connect youth with engineering and science through a Minority Participation Plan in Springfield, Ill. Announced in December 2013 by Springfield Mayor Mike Houston, the plan has been implemented and funded by the city of Springfield, Sangamon County and Hanson, which are working together to identify and mentor minority youth.

The goal of the program is to foster interest in careers involving science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). The Minority Participation Plan will provide opportunities through education, job training and internships.

As part of the plan, approximately 25 students attended an Engineering Open House at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign March 15, 2014. Girls in sixth, seventh or eighth grade also had the opportunity to attend an Expanding Your Horizons Conference on March 29, 2014, at Lincoln Land Community College in Springfield to learn about STEM careers. And students were interviewed to attend Michigan Technological University’s Summer Youth Programs at the campus in Houghton, Mich., for a weeklong summer camp focusing on rail engineering.
